Dysphagia | Impaired swallowing
Assessment involves checking the integrity of the swallow including testing specific nerves involved in safe chewing and swallowing.
The goal is to ensure individuals maintain adequate hydration and nutrition with optimum safety and efficiency without signs and symptoms of aspiration (entrance of food/fluids into the lungs) for the highest appropriate diet level.
Diet and fluid modification and/or specific compensatory strategies may be advised to facilitate optimum safety and efficiency of the swallowing function.
Training is often required to ensure the individual and carers/family are clear on supporting safe swallowing and preventing adverse outcomes.
